Entry to an MFA program generally requires a bachelor’s degree prior to admission, but many institutions do not require that an undergraduate major be exactly the same as the MFA field of study. The Master of Fine Arts differs from the Master of Arts in that the MFA, while still an academic program, centers around professional artistic practice in the particular field, whereas programs leading to the MA usually center on the scholarly, academic, or critical study of the field.

Ever since the publication of the Chad Harbach-edited anthology MFA vs. NYC: The Two Cultures of American Fiction earlier in the year, the perennial neurosis about whether or not an advanced degree in writing is worth it has become a progressively louder conversation. What is your advice for young writers? You have to get an MFA. Without an MFA nobody will look at you right, so you have to get an MFA. This is the big problem — just because you’re getting an MFA doesn’t mean you have to write for the Academy. Don’t temper your personality down with words.
