After graduation, White traveled and studied in Europe with his classmate Daniel Coit Gilman. Between 1853 and 1854, he studied at the Sorbonne, the Collège de France, and the University of Berlin. In October 1858, White accepted a position as a Professor of History and English literature at the University of Michigan, where he remained on faculty until 1863.
